The Sound Manifesto
نویسندگان
چکیده
Computing practice today depends on visual output to drive almost all user interaction. Other senses, such as audition, may be totally neglected, or used tangentially, or used in highly restricted specialized ways. We have excellent audio rendering through D-A conversion, but we lack rich general facilities for modeling and manipulating sound comparable in quality and flexibility to graphics. We need coordinated research in several disciplines to improve the use of sound as an interactive information channel. Incremental and separate improvements in synthesis, analysis, speech processing, audiology, acoustics, music, etc. will not alone produce the radical progress that we seek in sonic practice. We also need to create a new central topic of study in digital audio research. The new topic will assimilate the contributions of different disciplines on a common foundation. The key central concept that we lack is sound as a general-purpose information channel. We must investigate the structure of this information channel, which is driven by the cooperative development of auditory perception and physical sound production. Particular audible encodings, such as speech and music, illuminate sonic information by example, but they are no more sufficient for a characterization than typography is sufficient for a characterization of visual information. To develop this new conceptual topic of sonic information structure , we need to integrate insights from a number of different disciplines that deal with sound. In particular, we need to coordinate central and foundational studies of the representational models of sound

Towards a UX manifesto
In this workshop we invite researchers, educators and practitioners to contribute to the construction of a coherent Manifesto for the field of User Experience (UX). Such a UX manifesto should express statements about issues like: Fundamental assumptions underlying UX (principles), positioning of UX relative to other domains (policy) and action plans for improving the design and evaluation of UX...
متن کاملThe SPI Manifesto and the corresponding ECQA certified SPI manager Training
In order to define a modern approach for Software Process Improvement (SPI), the SPI Manifesto was developed, discussed, and finalized at the 16 EuroSPI Conference in 2009 in Alcala, Spain. The common understanding gained during the discussion and usage of the manifesto formed a nucleus from which the new ISO/IEC 33014[ISO01] was derived. In parallel to the development of the SPI Manifesto, the...

متن کاملThe QED manifesto revisited
We present an overview of the current state of formalization of mathematics, and argue what will be needed to make the vision from the QED manifesto come true. This short and intentionally provocative paper is dedicated to Andrzej Trybulec. When I first wrote about the Mizar system, Andrzej wrote to me: I have looked to pages that you have prepared. [. . . ] I advertise them, even if they are a...
